Cape Town – The bail application of a 31-year-old man accused of raping and murdering 11-year-old Stacha Arends will resume in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Randy Tango was arrested shortly after the girl’s body was found.

Stacha’s naked body was found in the early hours of Tuesday, March 30 in a field behind the Swartklip Centre in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

She was reported missing at 19:35 on the Monday night, and was last seen watching movies at a friend’s house.

Tango, who lives two doors away from the Arends family, was taken into custody on the Tuesday, shortly after the girl’s body was found. He was later charged in connection with her death.

Police found the girl’s clothes in the vicinity on Wednesday, May 31.

Out on parole

The case was initially postponed to Monday, April 3, because legal aid was not available, then later changed to May when Tango obtained legal representation from legal aid.

Tango was released on parole in October after serving time for car theft.

Arends' murder came a week after the body of Rene Roman was found in a house in the street where she lived in Lavender Hill.

The 13-year-old had been helping her mother take laundry off the washing line when she asked to go to the nearby shop to buy chips on March 10. She was never seen again.

She had been missing for over a week when her partially decomposed body was found in a bungalow in St Agatha Street. Her body had been covered with a carpet.

Her hands and feet were tied and she was half naked. A 50-year-old man was arrested for her murder.
