Johannesburg - Nine people, most of whom were passengers at the back of a bakkie, were injured in a crash in Boksburg, paramedics said on Saturday.

The crash happened on the corners of Atlas and Elizabeth Roads in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on Friday night, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found people scattered all over the intersection.

"It is understood that eight people were in the bakkie and three people were in the car at the time of the collision. Majority of the people that were sitting in the back of the bakkie were ejected during the collision," Vermaak said.

Three of the car occupants were treated for moderate injuries on scene before being transported to hospital while six people from the bakkie were treated for various injuries.

"The front passenger of the bakkie had to be freed from the wreckage by the local fire department. Three people from the bakkie were assessed on scene, but later declined to be transported to hospital," Vermaak said.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
