Durban - A truck carrying beer overturned on the N2 near Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday, spilling thousands of litres of its precious cargo onto the freeway, paramedics said.

The truck overturned near the Dickens Road off-ramp, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The cause of the accident was unclear. Beer crates and bottles were scattered across the south-bound lanes.

Traffic in the north-bound lanes was backed up for kilometres because people stopped at the accident scene.

Police had their hands full keeping control of the area, Botha said. The south-bound lanes would remain closed until the spill had been cleaned up.
