Bloemfontein - A Frankfort farmer’s five-year-old son has died after breaking his leg in a freak accident.

Sidney Graaff was playing with a group of children in a barn on the farm Middenbult, near Frankfort, around 17:00 on Wednesday, his aunt Gillian Graaff told Netwerk24.

"There were also adults in the barn," she said.

A loader tyre, which had been leaning against a wall, fell on Sidney’s leg. Graaff said it was unclear why it toppled over as it had been there for some time.

However, the children might have accidentally knocked it over.

The tyre hit Sidney’s right leg with full force and grazed his left leg.

Sidney’s parents, SW and Leoné, immediately summoned medical help and the broken leg was splinted on the farm. He was taken to Mediclinic Vereeniging, where a scan showed his leg was broken above and below the knee.

The doctor said the fracture on his shin could be set with plaster of paris, but that they would have to operate on his thigh because the break was very high and bad.

"Everything was under control and Sidney was admitted to ICU. The nursing staff arranged for Leoné to overnight at the hospital so that she could be near Sidney.”

Around 23:30 a nurse noticed Sidney’s condition had deteriorated and more medical staff were called to help.

Leoné, who was asked to leave the ward, realised there was something seriously wrong with Sidney, Graaff said.

"We don’t know what caused his death, but his heart apparently wasn’t beating properly," Gillian said.

He died shortly after that.

“It is a freak that he died.”

Sidney had a twin sister, Kirsten, and two brothers, Pedri and Marnus, who are still in primary school.

No funeral arrangements had been made.

Naretha Antunes posted on Facebook: “We are going to miss you darling Sidney. You were one of the most beautiful blonde ‘boerseuntjies’ in our town.”
