PICS: Long weekend road carnage in SA

It is a terrible weekend on our roads, with many fatal accidents already reported and more expected.

Durban – A six-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital following Sunday night’s fatal accident which claimed seven lives on the R617 in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

The seven people who died at the scene were in a light motor vehicle which collided with a truck about 21:25, police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said on Monday.

The deceased are believed to be from one family.

"The six-year-old boy was taken to hospital, where he is reported to be in a critical condition. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated," Gwala said.

The truck driver was also injured in the accident.

A case of culpable homicide was being investigated by the Himeville police, she said.

Meanwhile, five people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a BMW and a Toyota Corolla on the N3 highway in Van Reenen, KwaZulu-Natal, also on Sunday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said the incident happened at 16:15.

A boy, believed to be 11 years old, was among the three injured occupants of the BMW, said Siddall.

The deceased were occupants of the Toyota Corolla.
