Pietermaritzburg - A seven-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a quarry in the Waterloo area, in Durban near Verulam on Sunday.

Netcare911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that reports from the scene indicated that the boy was swimming with his friend in the quarry when he experienced difficulty and drowned.

“When paramedics arrived on scene, we treated the friend for shock. The boy then walked home after he was assessed,” Mathe said.

The boy who drowned was recovered by a rescue officer from Ethekwini Fire and Rescue, as well as officials from Emergency Control SA.

The child was declared dead on scene by paramedics.
