Durban – A 7-year-old boy, who has not uttered a word since he heard his father allegedly stabbing his mother to death three weeks ago, finally spoke a few words this weekend.

However, the only word he uttered were expressing feelings of hatred towards his father and saying he did not want his surname anymore, a family friend said on Monday.

The little boy, along with other children, heard the entire incident while cowering in the adjacent bedroom.

“He’s receiving counselling, because he has been quiet and reserved since she died. I got a message he spoke up for the first time at the weekend, only saying he hated his father, because he allegedly killed his mother,” family spokesperson Dolly Hadebe, 31, said.

She is not related to the couple.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said on November 8, a-34 year-old suspect stabbed his 32-year-old estranged wife in KwaDabeka, Clermont. The deceased, a legal assistant, sustained a wound on the chest and later succumbed to her injuries.

Woman whipped until she bled

The suspect, employed by Transnet, appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a bail application.

Hadebe said the couple, who were married in December 2013, had a tumultuous relationship.

A copy of the restraining order obtained against the suspect detailed a horrific incident that forced the deceased to finally leave him. On March 1, she was accused of cheating and whipped until she bled.

Hadebe said the couple was separated when the suspect's father died in late October.

“Two weeks later there was a traditional cleansing ceremony and she went to help prepare for it.

“When she wanted to leave [after the ceremony], an argument broke out."

The accused allegedly fetched a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her while she was in the bedroom.

Hadebe said the woman's mother received a call at around 01:00 informing her the deceased "had hurt herself" and been rushed to KwaDabeka clinic.

‘Children saw her with blood all over her’

When she arrived at the clinic she was informed her daughter had died from a stab wound to the chest.

With conflicting stories on what happened, the police were called and taken to the house where the incident occurred.

Hadebe said it was only when the children, including the deceased’s son, walked out of the room next to the crime scene that someone at the house told the police what had happened.

“The children were crying because they heard the argument and saw her walk out of the room with blood all over her.”

The little boy has been placed in the care of his maternal grandmother.
