Cape Town – Western Cape police and the provincial social development department are investigating the alleged rape of a boy by another youngster at a children’s home in Cape Town, a news report said on Friday.

The 10-year-old child was allegedly raped by a boy just two years older at the SA Children’s Home in Gardens, Cape Town, Eyewitness News reported.

The incident had apparently taken place in February and the boy’s mother told EWN that the home had only told her about it three days later.

The boy is in the home because his mother suffers from severe anxiety and depression.

The incident is one of a number of child-on-child sexual assault cases to have come to light recently.

In February, The Citizen reported that 15 Durban schoolboys had been arrested for raping a teenage girl and taking a video of the incident.

In the same month, four boys were arrested in Richard’s Bay for allegedly forcing a group of boys who had been swimming in a reserve to perform sexual acts on each other.

Joan van Niekerk, president of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, told the Independent on Saturday newspaper that children were often exposed to sexual images but were not taught about responsible management of sexuality.
