Cape Town – Three men have been arrested after a gang of armed robbers helped themselves to at least R300 000 from a petrol station in Bonteheuwel on Tuesday morning - despite its location next to a City of Cape Town law enforcement base.

"This was a very daring robbery because our law enforcement base is literally next door to the garage," said City safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith.

He said an officer was alerted to a suspicious group loitering near the Engen garage between 07:00 and 08:00.

"He sourced back-up and just as the officers arrived at the garage, five men came storming out of the premises. The officers gave chase, during which one of the suspects opened fire on them."

He said officers returned fire and caught up with two suspects. One was apparently found with just more than R20 000, while the other had around R2 500.

Smith said the petrol station proprietor indicated that at least R300 000 had been taken.

Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that five men had held employees and customers at gunpoint.

It was her understanding that two men had been arrested inside the shop, and another in Langa with a getaway vehicle.

She said some of the money was recovered.

According to Smith, members of the public had told law enforcement officers that they had seen a red Ford Laser being used during the robbery.

They traced the vehicle to Langa and arrested the driver with the assistance of police. A firearm was also recovered.

Smith said at least four suspects were still on the run.

He commended the officers for their quick reaction and the public for their assistance.

Rwexana said three suspects, aged 26 to 31, will appear in court once charged with business robbery.
