Cape Town – National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shaun Abrahams has invited Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to make representations in relation to his fraud charge.

The National Prosecuting Authority on Monday confirmed the invitation, despite Gordhan’s public pronouncement that he would not be making representations.

Lawyer Tebogo Malatji said on behalf of Gordhan on Friday: "The main reason for his decision is that he does not have any confidence in the NDPP's ability or willingness to afford him a fair hearing. First, we repeatedly asked the NPA to afford the minister an opportunity to make representations to them before they decided whether to prosecute the minister, but they spurned our requests."

Abrahams told Parliament's justice committee on Friday that he was willing to review the decision to prosecute Gordhan if approached to do so.

The NPA has given Gordhan a deadline of 17:00 on Tuesday.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
