Johannesburg – The Buffalo City Metro Municipality has urged residents to stockpile water as they face water restrictions which will last until February.

The municipality said on Wednesday that residents should keep at least 25 litres of water for emergency purposes and for household use.

"BCMM is experiencing a higher water demand than expected during this summer season, which has resulted in very low water levels in the Mdantsane Water Supply System," it said in a statement.

Mdantsane Water Supply System provides water to Needscamp, Ncera villages and Kaysers Beach.

Residents were requested to conserve the little water they had and to repair their internal leaks and report any suspected municipal water leaks to the municipality.

The municipality also said it was currently upgrading the Mdantsane pump station at Mzonyana Water Treatment Works, which would permanently resolve the water supply challenges.

The upgrade was expected to be completed in September 2016.

Meanwhile, in Senekal in the Free State residents were reportedly fighting over water.

Netwerk24 reported that fights broke out among some residents who had been without water for three weeks.

The Syferfontein dam was reportedly running dry.
