Durban - Tongaat police are probing the brutal murder of a man whose charred remains were found in a field on Monday.

The grim discovery was made by two men who had been walking through the bush in the Emona area and stumbled upon the remains of the man who has still not been identified.

Police sources with knowledge of the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told News24 that preliminary observations from the scene pointed towards murder.

The man had a deep gash on his head and a tyre had also been placed on his body and used to fuel the fire.

Members of the police’s Search and Rescue Unit recovered the body, which was sent to the state mortuary for further examination.

In another incident, the Search and Rescue Unit pulled the charred remains of a man from the burnt shell of a shack in Chatsworth.

It is understood that the shack had been razed to the ground after a lamp fell over.
