Johannesburg - The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has called for an urgent intervention on a possible minibus taxi strike in Gauteng, which might leave commuters stranded on Monday.

“Actions that impact negatively on our economy will jeopardise efforts towards recovery and result in job losses," said Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu in a statement.

He said he welcomed an assurance by South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Gauteng secretary-general, Ralph Jones, that the taxi industry is willing to engage with the MEC of transport Ismail Vadi and his community safety counterpart Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.

However, he said that Jones's denial that the taxi industry is planning a strike in Gauteng on Monday was a matter of concern.

"A strike action organised by faceless people is bound to be hijacked by forces that are earnestly involved in destabilising activities in our communities,” he said.

He further said issues of concern to the taxi industry must not compromise road safety.

"Parties must use their engagement to recommit themselves to reduce the carnage on public roads.”
