Pretoria - A 28-year-old Canadian fugitive is expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, following his arrest on Wednesday, the police said.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the man, who had been on the run for more than two years, is wanted in Canada for murder and possession of firearms charges.

Naidoo said he was arrested by Interpol's Extradition Task Team in Benoni, on Gauteng's East Rand.

"The suspect, who skipped bail in Canada in 2013 and fled to South Africa later that August before his next appearance in September, had been living with his relatives in this country.

"Upon receiving an extradition request in March this year from the Canadian authorities, the South African authorities, through Interpol, began tracing the man."

Naidoo said he could not be identified until he appeared in court for extradition proceedings.

He said the suspect was the third person to have been arrested by the Interpol extradition team in recent weeks.

"Last month an Israeli and a British national were arrested here in Gauteng after law enforcement agencies from their respective countries requested assistance from South Africa.

"Their cases are currently before the Randburg Magistrate's Court," said Naidoo.
