Durban – The house fire that killed a 38-year-old mother in Malvern, Durban on Wednesday night was caused by a burning candle, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane told News24 that there was no electricity at the woman’s home at about 21:00 when she allegedly decided to use the candle.

"The candle was placed next to a curtain which then caught fire. She got stuck in her bedroom and she was burnt to death," Zwane said.

Ceron Lennox, Rescue Care Paramedics operations manager, said the woman’s two children, aged ten and two, luckily escaped the fire that ripped through their house in Lewis Byron Road.

Rescue Care Paramedics arrived on the scene with the Durban Fire Department to find the house well alight, she said.

"The Durban Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze whilst paramedics assessed the two children. Once the fire was extinguished the fire department entered the building and found a lady believed to be in her 30s had sustained severe burns and there was nothing more paramedics could do and she was declared deceased on the scene," said Lennox.

The two children were cared for by the neighbour, she said.

According to Blue Security media and liaison officer Andreas Mathios, the woman's husband had passed away just earlier on Wednesday.

An inquest docket was opened at Bellair police station for investigation, Zwane said.
