Cape Town - A police officer is facing a fraud charge for allegedly submitting claims on behalf of informants, but then pocketing the money paid.

The detective constable, 32, stationed at the Cape Town Central police station, was arrested there on Thursday.

He appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on the same day and was released on bail.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said the detective constable, who she declined to name, allegedly "defrauded informers by submitting claims on their behalf and the money claimed never reached them".

She said a fraud case was opened.

"An investigation into the matter revealed that the constable submitted several claims between 2013 and 2015 and the signatures of the recipients were different from the claimants' signatures on their registration forms," Rwexana said.

An arrest warrant was issued for the detective constable in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He is expected back in the court on December 15.
