Cape Town - A vehicle that was packed so full of perlemoen (abalone) that fluid was dripping out the doors was discovered on a flatbed tow truck in Cape Town, police said on Thursday.

The K9 Unit was patrolling on the N2 highway near Sir Lowry’s Pass on Wednesday night when they noticed the truck, according to the police Facebook page.

It was transporting an Opel Record with a Limpopo registration number.

Suspicions were raised when police noticed that the seats and headrests were covered with duvets.

The officers chased the tow truck and pulled it over near Lwandle. They then noticed that fluid was dripping from the Opel.

When they removed the duvets, they found the entire interior and boot were stacked with bags of perlemoen.

The 5 626 units of shucked perlemoen had an estimated street value of R800 000.

Two men, aged 28 and 29, from Grabouw and Bonteheuwel, were arrested.

They would appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
