Cape Town – A Cape Town metro police officer was shot dead while on duty in Eerste River on Monday afternoon, Western Cape police confirmed.

Two armed suspects attacked the uniformed 53-year-old close to his home in Avon Road, Devon Park, around 15:00, said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut.

They fled the scene with his service pistol and hand radio.

Traut said they were investigating the circumstances and motive for the murder.

The attack followed an announcement on Monday morning that the city’s officers would undergo specialised training in the wake of increased attacks.

A total of 71 officers came under attack between last January and this January, said the city’s safety and security mayoral committee member, JP Smith.

He described this increase as "alarming".

The US Drug Enforcement Administration would be offering stress exposure training to 50 of the city’s metro police, traffic and law enforcement officers in the next two weeks.

It was hoped that placing officers in ultra-realistic virtual reality and simulation training would equip them with the skills to react appropriately in stressful and highly dangerous situations.
