Cape Town – A Cape Town law enforcement officer escaped with minor injuries after being pushed out of a moving minibus taxi, a city official said on Thursday.

The officer had instructed the taxi driver to pull over in Manenberg at the weekend after he nearly collided with his official vehicle, said City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith.

“As the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed it was very full and asked a passenger to alight so that he could get in and take a closer look.”

The taxi driver allegedly pulled off and the officer was pushed out.

According to a police statement, he was pushed by men operating the sliding door. He sustained injuries to his elbows and ribs, but was not hospitalised.

Smith said the officer would be back at work on Friday, when he would undergo a follow-up medical examination.

Western Cape police said a 25-year-old man was arrested on an attempted murder charge.

He appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court this week and the matter was postponed to April 22, said Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

“We are noticing an unfortunate and disturbing trend where suspects, but also members of the public, are targeting enforcement staff,” said Smith.

He hoped the court dealing with the matter would send a strong message to those who treated the law with contempt.
