Cape Town - Police arrested a teenager late on Monday in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old boy in gang hotspot Wesbank.

The boy was gunned down on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said an 18-year-old suspect was arrested in Mfuleni late on Monday and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was found on him.

“We have reason to believe that the seized firearm could have been used in the murder, however this will be determined by a ballistic test,” he said.

The 18-year-old was the second suspect arrested in connection with the murder.

Traut said another suspect, aged 23 years, was arrested on Monday morning.

In another incident in Wesbank, police discovered a hunting rifle and an R5 round of ammunition there on Tuesday after following up on a tip-off.

Three men, aged between 22 and 24 years, were arrested.

Traut said in an unrelated incident on Tuesday, two other suspects, aged 21 and 24 years, were arrested in the area for having a prohibited gun.

“A zipgun with one 9mm round was found in their possession,” he said.

“Criminals can expect a harsher approach by SAPS as we are heading for the holiday season in this province.”
