Durban – Western Cape police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 19-year-old man was attacked with a panga in Claremont last week.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut on Saturday said the man, who has been identified by the Saturday Argus as Zander Vermeulen, from Claremont, was attacked in the early hours of January 22 while walking at corners of Bowwood and Foyle Roads.

Vermeulan was reportedly walking home from a nightclub when he was attacked.

Traut said at around 03:00, a vehicle with unknown occupants pulled up along Vermeulan and the suspects asked for directions to the nearest ATM. The teenager gave the suspects the directions and carried on walking.

"It is alleged that one of the occupant’s got out from the vehicle, armed with a panga and walked towards the victim and for no reason hit him on the back of his head with the panga.

"A scuffle then ensued, resulting in the victim falling on his back."

Trout said in an attempt to shield himself from the panga, Vermeulen lifted his hand to cover himself and the panga hit him on the hand, severely wounding him. It was reported that Vermuelan's left hand had to be reattached after the incident.

Trout said the suspects then fled the scene.

"The victim was admitted to hospital. The circumstances surrounding the case are being investigated and no one has been arrested as yet," said Trout.
