Cape Town – The City of Cape Town will honour and celebrate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah on Reconciliation Day.

The City said it would hold a purple march in honour of the two stalwarts on Wednesday for their work in promoting peace, reconciliation and equality in the country.

The City of Cape Town said in a statement on Tuesday that the Tutus had campaigned tirelessly and been the voices of the voiceless on challenges confronting, not only the society, but the world.

"The City wants to create a wave of purple to show our solidarity in continuing the work of reconciliation so we encourage residents to come out wearing purple," it said.

The march will start at the Prestwich Memorial at 11:00 and proceed down the Fan Walk.

It will be led by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille, along with Reverend Mpho Tutu and other faith leaders.

It will end at the Cape Town Stadium forecourt.

The march will be followed by a short service.

The festivities will also include a free concert by the Soweto String Quartet, Jimmy Dludlu and Alistair Izobell and Friends.
