Johannesburg - Three people were assessed on Saturday after a cash-in-transit heist occurred on the R24 near Barbara road on Johannesburg’s East Rand, paramedics say.

"Shortly before 11:00, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found a security van that was blown apart," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"Two security guards were found on the scene. Both were assessed by the paramedics and found with no physical injuries.

Vermaak said a secondary incident occurred when flying debris landed on a vehicle during the explosion.

"The driver of the vehicle was assessed but also found with no physical injuries."

Commuters were told to expect traffic delays near OR Tambo International.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungiso Dlamini said an unknown amount of armed men were believed to have attacked a cash-in-transit van.

They made off with an unknown amount of money, as well as one firearm belonging to a security official.

Police are investigating the incident.
