Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni Metro Police used cellphone footage of a man being beaten up in Benoni to track down four of his assailants and put them behind bars until they appear in court, a spokesperson said on Sunday.

Kobeli Mokheseng said assailants driving two Toyota Quantum minibuses and a Toyota Conquest stopped at a corner in Actonville and started assaulting a 30-year-old pedestrian.

When they were finished with him, they went in separate directions, unaware that some onlookers had filmed them.

Armed with the footage, Metro Police went in search of them, and found two at a nearby bottle store.  They allegedly admitted to the assault and explained that the men in the Conquest had rushed a friend to hospital because he had been attacked by the man they had beaten.

The two people in the Conquest were later spotted driving away from the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg and were also arrested.

The others are still at large.

The four will appear soon at the Benoni Magistrate's Court.
