Johannesburg - Israel Keobusitse Moiloa, the chief of Bahurutshe Ba Ga Moiloa in Dinokana near Zeerust, has been killed in a hit-and-run incident, the office of North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo said on Saturday.

According to Mahumapelo's office, police reported that Moiloa had stopped his vehicle on the Dinokana road to warn children against playing close the road on New Year's Day.

"[He] was hit by a passing vehicle while walking back to his car," the premier's office said.

It was alleged that the driver of the vehicle which hit the chief had tried to escape from the scene but a member of the public recorded the number plate, assisting police in tracing him.

Mahumapelo conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of the chief, the Dinokana community and the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders and the North West community.

"Kgosi Moiloa was a patriotic and responsible citizen who also lived up to the ideals of a selfless traditional leader," Mahumapelo said.

"We pray for the bereaved family to find peace and comfort during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” said Mahumapelo. He also thanked the community who assisted in tracing the driver of the vehicle that had hit the chief.
