Durban - A paedophile was sentenced to five life terms for raping five boys in Bergville in 2014, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Nonhlanhla Magwaza, 37, was sentenced by the Ladysmith Regional Court last week, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

Magwaza’s victims were aged between 9 and 12. He lured them to his homestead in the Bergville area where he told them they could play and have a meal.

“After the children were raped, Magwaza would give them a couple of rands to keep the secret,” he said.

“Magwaza continued with his despicable practice until one of the children spoke up and reported the incident to his mother.”

Police were alerted on the same day and arrested the man.

“During the trial the young victims gave excellent evidence which eventually led to the conviction and five life sentences,” he said.

Magwaza was declared unsuitable to work with children and his details would be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
