A nine-year-old boy, who died in a gruesome accident with his grandfather the past weekend, spent most of the Friday talking about how excited he was to spend the weekend with his beloved grandfather.

“He loved his oupa so much,” Linda Smit, Luan Alberts’ teacher, told YOU on Wednesday.

Luan and his grandfather, Allen Coleske, were involved in a head-on collision on Lazar Way in Randfontein on Saturday. Allen died on the scene while Luan was rushed to hospital. There, he was declared dead on arrival.

“He couldn’t wait to visit his oupa that weekend. Luan always spoke about how he and his oupa would race pigeons,” Linda said.

Luan survived another tragic car accident in Brandvlei, which claimed the lives of his mother, Jackie, his sister, Alandri, as well as Gunther Bühner, former principal of the Nic Diederichs Technical High School.

After the accident, Luan was enrolled at a school for special children, where he received skills training.

But this week, his desk in the grade 3 classroom at the Wesrand School in Krugersdorp stands empty.

“Luans friends have asked if the desk can remain in the class,” the heartbroken teacher said.

There’s also a photo of Luan, flowers and a candle in front of the classroom.

Linda says that Luan still reminded her of his birthday last week and told her that she must remember to buy him a cake.

“He told me that he turns 10 on the tenth day of the tenth month.”

The school-revue which kicks off in September, is now being done in memory of Luan.

“Luan’s place in the revue and in the classroom is empty.”

On Wednesday the school held a full dress rehearsal for the show, during which official photos were also taken.

“We had to change his group’s dance to make up for his absence. He was dancing right in front.”

Luan was friendly child who enjoyed cracking jokes, his Linda remebered. “He was a happy chappy, and he was very smart.”

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, confirmed that Luan’s grandfather passed away before paramedics arrived on scene.

“Two bakkies were involved 9in a head-on collision.

“The child was thrown from the bakkie, sustaining serious injuries, and was taken to Lenmed Hospital by ambulance.

“There it was decided he should be airlifted to another hospital for treatment, but sadly, he passed away before that could be arranged.

“The adult was trapped in the bakkie and was declared dead on the scene,” a statement from ER24 read.
