Cape Town - Communities are essential in the fight against Nazism and terrorism, Sanco said on Saturday following the discovery of an arms cache and Nazi memorabilia in a Cape Town flat.

“We commend the vigilance and patriotism of the person that tipped off police and urge law enforcement agencies not to treat the matter as an isolated and insignificant incident,” South African National Civic Organisation spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu said.

Nazism and global terrorism were a threat to everyone, he said in a statement.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said while no arrests had been made, “a person of interest” had been identified.

Mahlangu called for this person to be arrested to help determine the origin of the weapons, their intended use, and to identify anybody else involved in the matter.

Two firearms with silencers, a telescope, and ammunition for various calibres of weapons were found in a flat behind a house in Vryburger Street, Bothasig, on Friday, following a tip-off.

The ammunition was for firearms including R1 and R5 rifles and 9mm and .45 handguns. Military gear, training and reloading equipment, and Nazi flags and memorabilia were also confiscated.
