KwaZulu-Natal – Two hijackers were arrested with the help of the community in Umlazi on Friday, police said.

The two suspects were wounded in a shootout with police and arrested, while a third suspect managed to escape on foot.

The two suspects, aged 18 and 19, were trying to hijack a car in Umlazi when the motorist flagged down a passing police officer.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said when the police officer stopped, the suspects fired shots at him, and he shot back, wounding the two suspects. “The community members came to his rescue and two suspects were successfully apprehended. One suspect fled the scene on foot,” Zwane said in a statement on Saturday.

The wounded suspects were taken to hospital and would appear in the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court once discharged, Zwane said.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the community’s efforts in helping apprehend the suspects.

“We highly appreciate the role played by the community in the apprehension of the suspects. This is the kind of partnership we need from our communities, together we can win the battle against criminals,” she said.
