Cape Town – A community in the city’s Southern Suburbs is rallying together for the family of a local girl who was murdered in the popular Tokai Forest area.

Residents of the Tokai, Constantia, Kirstenhof and surrounding areas have decided to hold a gathering on Tuesday in the leafy suburb to show solidarity with the 15-year-old girl’s family.

The 15-year-old had been out for a run with her mother, sister and the family’s dog on Monday at about 15:30 when she apparently went off jogging in a different direction, the Cape Times reported.

After not hearing from her daughter for almost half an hour, the mother raised the alarm and a search quickly began.

Sadly the teenager’s body was found not long after under fynbos.

“Our whole community is shattered....we are all devastated by this..........condolences [sic] to the family, our thoughts and prayers are with them,” one local wrote on a community page on Facebook.

Others posted photos of candles wishing that the girl’s family find peace.

Photos on Twitter showed residents placing flowers on the gates of the forest.

The area is a popular braai and jogging spot.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said the matter is under investigation and the victim’s name cannot yet be released.
