Durban – Messages of condolences for the death of newly-appointed KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu’s mother, Ntombi Mchunu, 85, have started streaming in.

Mchunu is mourning the death of a second family member. In April he buried his wife, Dudu, who died after a long illness, and his father - who is 100 years old - is in ICU in a hospital in Umtshezi.

The Office of the Premier announced on Tuesday morning that Mchunu’s mother had died after a short illness.

Mchunu was scheduled to attend public accounts committee hearings, but had to rush home after hearing the news.

ANC’s provincial secretary Super Zuma said the party was deeply saddened to hear about Mchunu’s mother’s death.

"We can imagine the pain the Mchunu family is going through after losing yet another family member in a short period of time…

"She will be sorely missed by many of the ANC volunteers and the community of Umtshezi where she lived. She opened her home to many members of the community who wanted to engage with comrade Willies Mchunu while discharging his responsibility as the servant," Zuma said.

The party has asked for South Africans to pray for Mchunu’s father.

The Inkatha Freedom Party’s Blessed Gwala said it was an emotional time for the family.

"We are mindful that Premier Mchunu has recently lost his beloved wife and that his elderly father is extremely ill in the ICU. While death is beyond our control and illness can take its toll on anyone, we pray that the Premier and his family will be comforted through prayer," Gwala said.

National Freedom Party’s Vikizitha Mlotshwa said: "We pray to God that he gives them [the family] the strength to overcome death & sickness."

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
