Johannesburg - A convicted killer was shot dead while out on daily parole from Boksburg prison on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.

According to eyewitnesses, his killers wore police uniforms, Captain Joep Joubert said.

He was shot while sitting in his friend’s car in Silverbush Crescent, Dalpark Extension 6, Brakpan.

“His friend went to fetch him from prison in the morning. They arrived at the friend’s place and when the friend got out of his car to open the gate, a Renault approached and the occupants fired shots at the vehicle.”

The killers drove a few blocks, parked, and set their car alight. Eight spent cartridges from an R5 rifle and 10 from a 9mm pistol were found on the scene.

The man’s friend was not injured.

“According to eyewitnesses on scene, the two suspects that fired shots were wearing police uniform, so our investigation will determine if they were bogus policemen or real law enforcement officers.”

The 48-year-old had been convicted of murder by the Durban High Court and sentenced to 19 years in prison.
