Cape Town – A police officer is in a stable condition in Milpark Hospital after he was shot when he happened upon an armed robbery at a Johannesburg supermarket on Friday night.

Police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu said the on-duty officer was walking to the store in the CBD with a security guard at about 19:30, unaware that six men were robbing the business.

“Two men were guarding the door and when they spotted our member in his uniform, one opened fire and shot the policeman in the upper body,” he said.

The robbers fled the scene.

In a separate incident in Cape Town, an off-duty constable was shot and killed in Thubelisha, Delft, also on Friday night.

The 28-year-old policeman was driving in his private vehicle when he reportedly noticed a red car blocking the road at the corners of Geelmelkhout and Hothron streets.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said before the officer could get out of his car to investigate, a gunman got out of the red car and started shooting at the officer, killing him.

A murder case is under investigation, she said.
