Pietermaritzburg - A Copesville man was allegedly stabbed several times by his neighbours when he asked them to quieten down whilst they were braaing late on Saturday night.

The victim, identified as Peter Paul, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with deep gashes on his head, neck and arms.

Quick work by the police’s Combined Action Team (CAT) resulted in the arrest of five men aged between 18 and 35.

The men were arrested within an hour of the incident.

According to a police source, Paul, who is believed to be in his 50s, was asleep at his Copesville home when loud music and shouting was heard from a neighbouring property where the residents were having a braai.

It is alleged he went on to the road to ask his neighbours to quieten down and that an argument ensued.

The police source said two men attacked him with Okapi knives, stabbing him repeatedly.

It is believed that Paul’s son then ran to his father’s aid, firing three shots into the air with a pistol.

The assailants fled when they heard the gunshots.

The son then rushed his father to hospital.

CAT members raced to the house to find blood staining the road.

Quick investigative work resulted in five men being taken into custody, two of whom are believed to be the attackers.

The police said Paul is reportedly “recovering well”.
