Johannesburg - Metro police officers and a three-man gang suspected to have hijacked a vehicle in Jeppe, Johannesburg exchanged fire in the streets of Crown Mines on Tuesday afternoon.

JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said a high-speed chase played out at around 11.30 while an official helicopter hovered above the scene.

Minnaar said the officers had spotted the "suspicious looking silver VW Toureg" and tried to pull it over.

"[The suspects] refused to pull over... [and] rather started shooting at the officers who returned fire hitting one suspect in the right shoulder and one in the upper back," said Minnaar.

The third suspect surrendered after his companions were injured.

"One illegal AK47, an Uzzi and a Star pistol were discovered inside the Toureg," said Minnaar.

One of the suspects remain in hospital under police guard while the other two are behind bars.

The three were expected to appear in court soon where they would face charges of vehicle theft and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
