Pietermaritzburg – Police and protesting students continue to face off at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus after a day of unrest spilled into the night on Monday.

The afternoon was characterised by skirmishes between students and authorities, the tense confrontation began when protesters overturned a car.

What followed was nearly three hours of to and fro, with officers firing teargas into the William O'Brien residence and students responding with bottles, stones and marbles fired from slingshots.

A female student, who spoke to News24 of condition of anonymity, said the battles were continuing on Monday night.

"Right now the boys have come inside the girls Elainor Russell Hall and they are collecting stones and bottles and rubbish to throw at the security outside," she said.

The student said "one boy" had been arrested after a clash with the police.

"On Milner Road by the entrance they managed to damage the street lights so everything is pitch black. This is going to go on all night," she said.

"There is teargas inside now," she added.

The academic programme was suspended at the Howard College and Westville campuses on Monday after sporadic bouts of violence.

This is a developing story.
