Bloemfontein – A man accused of sexually assaulting two young girls told one of them he wanted a "secret friend", the Bloemfontein Regional Court has heard, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Louis York told the court on Monday that Johannes Kleinhans, 38, of Universitas, knew the two girls had to be groomed in different ways.

He was sly in his approach with one of the girls.

"We’re at home today. See how lekker [nice] it is to smoke. Don’t you want to have a taste?" he allegedly told her, York said.

Just after she had taken a puff, he said: "If you tell anyone what I’m going to do to you now, I’ll tell them you smoke."

York said this was a well known ploy to groom a child for abuse.

"I want a secret friend again. You’re not allowed to tell anyone about what happened to you, otherwise I will find myself behind bars," he allegedly told her.

Kleinhans and his 36-year-old fiancé, Zelda Dreyer, are charged with raping the girl and her cousin between 2007 and 2012. The girls, who are both 17 now, were aged between 8 and 13 at the time.

Fiancé also facing charges

The couple is also charged with sexual assault, committing sexual acts in the presence of minors, and failing to report sexual offences against children.

According to York, Dreyer knew what was happening and took part in it.

Despite the shocking evidence against him, she was still in love with Kleinhans and sat next to him in court.

York said love was blind and, unfortunately, Dreyer had picked the wrong man.

Dreyer testified that the incidents had never happened. She said she did not know why the girls were lying and that she had a good relationship with them.

Kleinhans was the love of her life and she would support him no matter what, Dreyer said.

Magistrate Jan Greyvenstein postponed the case to later this week.
