Johannesburg – The DA’s billboards commenting on joblessness under President Jacob Zuma’s ANC government are racist, the ANC said on Thursday.

"Even in that message in the billboard, its depiction, if nothing else, expresses the character of a racist party. In their narrow view, unemployment in this country is caused by a black government," party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

Earlier on Thursday, the DA unveiled two billboards in central Johannesburg critical of Zuma and the ANC.

One of the two billboards had the words "More people jobless under Zuma’s ANC and counting..." on a yellow background, above a photo of a smiling Zuma. The second billboard, next to the first one, reads "Vote DA for change that creates jobs".

The billboards, on the corner of Jeppe and Sauer streets, had a live ticker of the number of unemployed people in the country.

Kodwa said the DA had failed to appreciate the damage caused by a minority government during apartheid. He said the opposition party had tried various gimmicks before to discredit the ANC.

"Apartheid is still alive because racism is in the DNA of the DA," he said.
