Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma will be under massive pressure to explain why he fired former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene during the State of the Nation address, the DA said on Saturday.

“The resignation… after a long and distinguished career in the finance family is a blow to Parliament,” said DA Shadow Minister of Finance David Maynier.

In a statement, he said the former minister, who resigned as an ANC MP in December, paid a “high price for doing the right thing and speaking truth to power”.

“In the end [he] sacrificed his seat because he was not prepared to sacrifice his integrity,” Maynier said.

“We do not know why the former minister resigned but the suggestion that he would be appointed to the New Development Bank is increasingly looking like a blatant lie manufactured to explain away the catastrophic decision to fire him in 2015.”

Nene on Saturday told News24 he felt it was “proper” for him to resign in light on his name being put forward to head the Brics bank.

He confirmed no formal offer has yet been received.
