Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance wants to cut the fat in government.

On Thursday, leader Mmusi Maimane said over the past few months, the party had been working on a plan to streamline government.

The party had long said it would govern with only 15 ministries, if elected into power.

Maimane said government, with 35 ministries, had become nothing more than an expensive “loyalty rewards programme” and needed to be trimmed.

This was the motivation behind the party's Operation Hlasela Mafutha, meaning “cut the fat”.

The ministries of finance, police, home affairs, justice and correctional services, and defence would stay.

The other ministries would be incorporated into larger entities. Trade and industry, small business development, economic development, mineral resources, tourism, and labour would be merged into the employment and enterprise ministry, for example.

According to its Vision 2029 document, the party envisioned that only some ministers would have deputies. This would depend on the number of departments reporting to a particular ministry.

Maimane said this would result in major savings, freeing up about R4.6 billion.
