Durban – A memorial service will be held on Thursday to honour the ANC’s founding president Langalibalele Dube’s last surviving daughter, Lulu, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said on Wednesday.

Dube, 84, died at a Durban hospital on Friday.

Provincial ANC spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli said the service would be held at the Durban Playhouse on Thursday at 14:00.

Dube’s funeral service is expected to be held on Saturday at the Ohlange Institute sport field at 09:00. Dube will be buried next to her parents at the institute.

eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo visited the Dube family on Wednesday.

"We pray for strength for her family during this time. We acknowledge the contribution she and the Dube family made to achieve a democratic South Africa. May her soul rest in peace," Nxumalo said.

Langa Dube, grandson of John Langalibalele Dube, said: "This is a difficult time for our family. We miss Mama Lulu’s warmth and the link she was in the family. She played a major role in this family and the community at large. We hope to continue her legacy, especially regarding early childhood development which she was passionate about."

He described Dube as a mediator and catalyst of peace.

"She was actively involved during the time when there was political unrest in the community. Her passion was to see children being developed and assisting them wherever she could. We should continue to show love and offer assistance to everyone in her memory," Langa said.
