Cape Town – Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille on Tuesday mourned the loss of Democratic Alliance councillor John Heuvel.

Heuvel, 56, died late on Monday night following a brief illness. He had a heart attack a few weeks ago.

The mayor described him as a friend and colleague.

"I have been working with Heuvel for more than 10 years and came to know him as a passionate servant in his community."

Heuvel served as the councillor for ward 109, which included Macassar, Croydon and Faure.

De Lille extended her condolences to his wife, Yolanda, his three children Jade, Sharna and Mishay, and other family and friends.

"This is indeed a great loss to his family and to the City of Cape Town and I will always be grateful for his contribution to our work."
