Johannesburg – More than 17 people were reportedly killed on South Africa’s busy roads on Monday.

Three people died in KwaZulu-Natal following a busy Christmas weekend. IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics reported that the three died when a bakkie overturned on the R102 in Stanger early on Monday morning, while nine others sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor.

In another accident, a woman was killed and three others injured when two cars collided head-on on the M25 KwaMashu Highway, under the N2 Bridge near Durban.

"Medics clambered into the wreckage to stabilise the injured, while the rescue officer used the Jaws of Life to free them. It was found that two people sustained life-threatening injuries, while two others were seriously injured," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Botha said the team worked fervently to resuscitate the woman. Tragically, despite their efforts, she was declared dead at the scene.

Plunge off KZN bridge

Meanwhile, a 52-year-old man survived an 80m plunge off a bridge on the N2 near Zinkwazi, in KwaZulu-Natal, after he lost control of his car on Monday morning.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst, the man sustained a partial amputation of one of his limbs and had multiple fractures.

A woman had also sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision on Caversham Road in Pinetown. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene and then transported her to a nearby hospital.

More die in Limpopo, Free State

In Limpopo, six people were killed and 12 others injured in an accident on the N17 between Springs and Secunda when a taxi and a truck collided.

In a separate incident, two people burnt to death when their car collided with a bakkie and caught fire on the N1 North, towards Botlokwa in Limpopo.

Limpopo traffic spokesperson Kagiso Mootane said the two deceased people were still trapped inside the vehicle and emergency personnel were struggling to get the remains of the victims out of the car.

Meanwhile, in the Free State, five people were killed when two cars collided head-on on the N1 near Ventersburg in the early hours of Monday morning. A woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, said Botha.
