Johannesburg - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters on Sunday cautioned holidaymakers driving back to Gauteng to “behave themselves” and stay on the right side of the road.

"Some motorists are showing signs of impatience and are starting to drive against the flow of traffic," the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said in a statement issued on behalf of Peters.

"[The] Minister urged motorists to behave themselves."

Peters was hard at work on Sunday, observing the traffic flow along key roads as many made their way back home after festive season adventures.

The RTMC said that traffic on the N3 was heavy.

One lane on the N1 north from Kranskop to Polokwane had been closed to allow traffic going south to flow better.

"Motorists are however warned that they can drive facing on-coming traffic only when directed by an officer. Otherwise this is unlawful."

Meanwhile, ‏@SAfmnews reported "chaos has erupted at the Kranskop toll plaza on the N1 South in Limpopo with motorists forcing their way through".
