Cape Town - A parrot as well as a dog and her five puppies, died in a fire which ripped through a Plumstead animal shelter in the early hours of Tuesday.

The premises of PlumPets  which rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes strays – suffered extensive damage, owner Paulette Bousfield said on Thursday.

“It appears that the fire was caused by the electric box,” she said. “Right now we can’t enter because the roof may cave in.”

The house from which the organisation operates was divided into quarters for, among others, a cattery and an isolation room.

The dogs and the parrot are believed to have died of smoke inhalation, Bousfield said.

Most of the animals have been fostered by animal lovers while those with special needs are being accommodated at the Plumstead Animal Hospital.

On its Facebook page, the shelter said they have been overwhelmed with donations of dog food, bedding, plastic containers and newspaper.

But PlumPets urgently needs cash to repair the damage to the building. It also requires rubbish bags, rubber brooms and household items as all the furniture was destroyed in the blaze.
