Dog tracker crucial in catching ATM bombers

Pietermaritzburg - A police tracker dog played a key role in the early arrest of an ATM bomber whose gang demolished a Greytown machine, getting away with R500 000 in January 2013.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court heard on Wednesday that a K9 unit tracker dog was taken to Greytown soon after an ATM was blown up around 3am.

Dog handler Warrant Officer P Marian told the court the dog was taken about 30km from the town, where a bakkie which had been used in the bombing and escape had broken down.

From the bakkie, the dog tracked a blood spoor, following it into the veld for about 50metres. It came across a blood-stained knitted cap. Its owner, the accused Thembela Ngubane 27, of Bergville, was wounded in a shoot-out with a Greytown security officer.

Investigators had learned that about seven gang members came from Bergville.

Lieutenant Madoda Nzimande looked for Ngubane at the Emmaus Hospital near Bergville, where he was told that he had been admitted but was transferred to Ladysmith provincial hospital.

There he found Ngubane in a ward, receiving treatment for wounds to his temple and hand. He was speaking on a cellphone which Nzimande took to investigate his movements and alleged involvement in the robbery.
