Cape Town – SPCA staff were evacuating dogs and cats from parts of Simon’s Town affected by a raging fire on Thursday, the city’s Disaster Risk Management Centre said.

Spokesperson Charlotte Powell said the animal welfare organisation had five vehicles on the scene, including a dog trailer and horse box.

Ten staff members were assisting. A few dogs and cats had already been evacuated to a holding area. They were also nursing a tortoise with burn wounds.

Powell said residents living in Runciman Heights and Harbour Heights were part of the evacuation.

Municipal halls in Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek, as well as the Simon’s Town Country Club hall, were being used as emergency shelters.

She said the fire had reached 13 structures, destroying some and damaging others.

A helicopter had returned to water bomb inaccessible slopes and no further structural damage had been reported.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, confirmed the fire had spread and was not yet under control.

“It is being fanned by very strong winds at the moment and is blowing down to residential properties.”

He said the blaze had moved to Murdock Valley.
