Pretoria - Ribane Laka Secondary School pupils in Mamelodi have been told not to let their circumstances restrict them from achieving their goals in life.

"Don’t allow your socio-economic situation to define you. It can help to build your character,” Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa told them on Wednesday morning.

"Don’t look at what other families are doing, but work towards bettering your own circumstances."

Ramokgopa, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi were at the school to congratulate it for obtaining a 100% matric pass rate last year.

Ramokgopa said the school showed that, despite being in a poor area, being the best was still possible.

"You showed that we can have a township school, where parents don’t work and the learners don’t know what they will eat for lunch, achieving a 100% pass rate," said Ramokgopa.

The school was one of two from townships in Tshwane which achieved a 100% pass rate.

Ramokgopa called on the matric pupils to get more bachelors passes and distinctions in 2016.
