Don't sleep on the job, EFF tells Mashaba

2016-09-13 20:33

Johannesburg - Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba was accused of sleeping on the job by the EFF during the second sitting of council on Tuesday.

"It seems like you are sleeping on the job. We elected you to protect the people of Johannesburg beyond political and racial lines. What is it that you have done?" EFF councillor Silumko Mabona asked Mashaba during his address.

Mabona told Mashaba to act quickly in responding to poor decision-making by municipal officials.

He urged Mashaba to take a leaf out of President Jacob Zuma's book and quickly deal with bad appointments made by the previous administration.

"Even the president of the ANC was quick in dealing with poor decision-making of appointing Des 'Weekend Special' van Rooyen as the minister of finance."

A UDM councillor said, while they congratulated Mashaba on his appointment, they would monitor him diligently.

Mashaba was making his inaugural address in the second sitting of council.

Chaos erupted earlier when EFF supporters, who claimed to have campaigned for the DA in Alexandra, marched to the council gates demanding payment.

Police clashed with the protesters, who were joined by EFF councillors, and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
