3 dead, dozens hurt in Durban bus crash

Durban - The death toll from a mass casualty bus accident in Chatsworth on Monday has risen to three.

Medics at the scene have transported the injured to hospitals across the city and are now searching the wreckage.

It is understood that three people died within the bus.

Key sources say that the toll may rise as the search beneath the wreckage continues.

Earlier, paramedics reported that the accident on the M1 Higginson Highway near Savannah Park in Chatsworth had left two people dead and at least 70 injured.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that initial reports from the scene indicate that four people had been critically injured.

He said that the Red Cross Air Mercy Helicopter as well as a SANDF 15 Squadron Oryx had been activated to assist with airlifting the critically injured to hospital.

RescueCare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that medics on the ground faced a frenetic scene and had called for ambulances from across the city to aid at the crash site.
